How do I know if a charity is legitimate?

Cherryfish only accepts charities that are verified by the IRS. Each nonprofit must be an active 501(c)3 in good standing or eligible to receive tax deductible donations to be eligible to join Cherryfish.  Through our verification process, Cherryfish confirms the account created is genuinely affiliated with an approved IRS entity. The tax status is sourced from IRS databases which we update periodically.

If your organization was not found through our EIN lookup, it may be part of an IRS group exemption.  This is common amongst religious institutions and large national organizations.  If you are part of a group exemption, please email and we will quickly walk you through how to get set up on Cherryfish.

If the IRS revokes a charity’s exempt status, the charity’s Cherryfish account will be suspended.  The charity administrator will be notified.  No activity (events, donations, auctions, etc.) will be available to the public during this time.  Once the IRS reinstates an exempt status, the Cherryfish account can be reinstated.
